A New Public Art Commission for Craigmillar in Edinburgh

June 18, 2013 | Categories:

I have just been awarded the commission to produce a sculpture to commemorate the life and work of Helen Crummy, the founder of the Craigmillar Festival Society. The sculpture is to be sited outside the newly built East Neighbourhood Centre and Craigmillar Library on Niddrie Mains Road, Edinburgh.

The Craigmillar Festival Society was a groundbreaking project and people came from all over the world to study the achievements of the local people behind it. Helen Crummy was the main mover and instigator of what grew into the CFS. This sculpture is a project very close to my heart; as a community artist working in Edinburgh in the late ‘70s/early 80s I was very aware of Helen Crummy and the Craigmillar Festival Society and I feel very privileged to be able to contribute to this celebration of a milestone in the history of Community Art and Helen's part in it.
